— Meet Anita

Hi, I’m Anita, your myofunctional voice specialist.

Anita Stryker, M.S., CCC-SLP — Based in Portland, Oregon. Offering in-person and telehealth sessions.

I treat voice disorders and myofunctional disorders and though clinically, they are two separate and distinct treatments, I am fascinated about the interconnected nature of the two.

I also work with children with articulation disorders, and sometimes bring singing into our sessions to help teach speech sounds. It makes the work more fun and engaging, and children are often more willing to repeat things when they’re singing than when they’re speaking. This supports motor learning and helps reinforce correct sound production.

My approach is rooted in evidence-based practice, shaped by lived experience, and tailored to each person I work with.

Myofunctional Therapy

Like with singing, my interest in myofunctional therapy was born out of personal experience. I’m passionate about helping people align the muscles of the orofacial complex so they can swallow, sleep, and breathe with greater ease. These functions are essential not just for daily comfort, but for long-term health and regulation.

If you’ve been navigating challenges like mouth breathing, tongue thrust, or disrupted sleep without answers, you’re not alone. Myofunctional therapy can be especially valuable for children, supporting healthy facial growth, speech development, and improved focus. For both children and adults, it helps address the root of these issues and restore ease in everyday functions like speaking, breathing, and swallowing.'

Manual Therapy

Tension in the face, jaw, neck, and throat can directly affect vocal ease, breath, and even swallowing. I use manual therapy to gently release these patterns — working with the soft tissues around the voice to support freer movement and clearer sound.

Sometimes the cycle runs in the other direction: breathing disturbances (like airway restriction at night) can trigger pain and tension in the jaw and face. That’s why I often integrate manual therapy with myofunctional and breathing exercises, and collaborate with other professionals when needed — to address both the symptoms and the root cause.

Whether you're dealing with chronic jaw tension, vocal fatigue, or symptoms of muscle tension dysphonia, hands-on therapy can be a powerful way to reduce restriction and support your body’s natural resonance.

“ My voice has already improved in the two months I've worked with her. ”

I do voice work with Anita. She's very pleasant to work with, and very knowledgeable. She explains the physiology of the mouth and throat as it relates to the production of sound.  She has me do things that are interesting and within my ability.  My voice has already improved in the two months I've worked with her.  I can highly recommend her.

  • I support people navigating a wide range of voice concerns — from muscle tension dysphonia, nodules, and chronic hoarseness to vocal fatigue, paradoxical vocal fold movement, and voice loss due to overuse or injury. I also work with professional voice users (like teachers, singers, and speakers) who want to restore ease and prevent future strain.

  • Voice therapy focuses on improving how your voice works — how it sounds, feels, and functions. Myofunctional therapy addresses patterns in the mouth, tongue, jaw, and breathing that may be contributing to tension or dysfunction. I often integrate both approaches to support long-term healing and more freedom in how your voice feels and performs.

  • My work is both grounded and intuitive. I draw on clinical training, decades of teaching voice, and my own healing journey. While I follow evidence-based protocols, I also listen closely — to you, your body, and the subtle cues that often get overlooked. My goal is to help you reconnect with your voice through curiosity, play, and deep trust in your body’s wisdom.
