Buteyko Breathing Technique

The Buteyko Breathing Technique retrains unhealthy breathing patterns, restoring calm, efficient breathing that supports the whole body. It can ease symptoms like anxiety, sleep disruption, and asthma while improving energy, focus, and overall well-being.

— What Is The Buteyko Breathing Technique?

Breathing with balance and ease.

The Buteyko Breathing Technique is a medically based program of breathing re-education that restores balance to the way we breathe. By improving carbon dioxide tolerance and optimizing oxygen delivery at the cellular level, it supports whole-body health. Research and clinical use show it can improve sleep quality, strengthen immune function, enhance athletic performance, and ease a variety of breathing-related conditions. Many people also notice reduced anxiety, greater calm, and an overall sense of well-being.

Buteyko Breathing is deeply connected to myofunctional therapy. Where myofunctional therapy fine-tunes the oral and facial muscles that shape breathing, Buteyko retrains the whole system—muscles, brain, and chemistry—for more efficient, balanced respiration. Used together, they offer a complete pathway to healthier breathing patterns.

This work may support people managing conditions such as:

  • Asthma, allergies, and chronic nasal congestion

  • Sleep apnea, snoring, and disrupted sleep

  • Anxiety, panic, or stress-related breathing issues

  • Fatigue and reduced stamina

  • Voice strain, phonotraumatic behaviors, or difficulty sustaining sound

Buteyko breathing works best as part of a holistic care plan. While it isn’t a replacement for medical treatment, it powerfully complements it—helping the body restore balance more fully. Calm, efficient breathing supports vocal health, athletic performance, and everyday resilience.

— My Approach

The quiet work of lasting change.

When I guide clients through Buteyko, I bring more than just the exercises. My decades of meditation practice shape how I understand stress, breath, and the subtle shifts that come when the body lets go of tension. I don’t teach meditation directly, but this background helps me offer calm, steady support as clients explore new breathing patterns.

As a singer, I bring an extra layer of awareness about how the oral muscles and the diaphragm interact. Even clients who aren’t working on their voice often find this perspective helps them make sense of their breathing in a new way and improves overall alignment.

I’m also a lifelong mover — a trained yoga instructor, dancer, and circus artist — so I naturally think about how breath supports posture, strength, and flow. For example, some of the exercises I give help engage the abdominal muscles of exhalation, laying the foundation for healthier posture and more efficient breathing over time.

Because I’ve practiced Buteyko myself, I understand both the challenges and the benefits of weaving it into daily life. I’ve even adapted routines for my child to support better sleep and focus, which keeps me grounded in the real-world impact of these tools.

What makes my approach different is that I see breath not just as a technique, but as a bridge — between stress and ease, between body and voice, and between effort and flow.

— Who I Work With

For those seeking steadier ground.

I love guiding people who are curious, motivated, and ready to notice real changes in their body. If you’re someone who pays attention to how you feel — and you enjoy practices that bring a sense of calm, clarity, or strength — you’ll likely find Buteyko breathing both fascinating and empowering.

This approach can be especially helpful if you want to:

  • Sleep more deeply and wake up refreshed

  • Use your voice with more ease and stamina

  • Feel calmer and more steady under stress

  • Bring healthier breathing into your everyday life

The best fit for this work is someone open to weaving small breathing practices into daily routines. Even simple shifts can add up to big changes — and I love supporting people who are ready to experience those shifts.

— What To Expect With Buteyko Breathing

Building lasting change, step by step.

In our first sessions, I start by getting to know you — your goals, daily routines, and what’s motivating you to explore Buteyko. I also take simple measurements of your breathing, such as the Control Pause, so we can choose the exercises that best fit your current state and needs.

From there, we build habits gradually. Rather than overwhelming you with a list of drills, I introduce one practice at a time and help you weave it into your day until it feels natural. During sessions, I may guide you through an exercise directly so you can experience it in real time, but the real impact comes from bringing these tools into everyday life.

My role is to make the process supportive and sustainable — tailoring the program to your energy, lifestyle, and goals, and celebrating progress along the way. Because breathing is both involuntary and sensitive, I emphasize safety, calm, and awareness.

The goal is not to “try hard” at breathing, but to observe, relax, and allow healthy patterns to emerge.

“ …my voice now maintains its strength without the strain that I have experienced throughout my life!”

Anita's voice training practice has allowed me to free my voice from vocal fatigue. Instead of barely being able to talk by the end of the day, my voice now maintains its strength without the strain that I have experienced throughout my life! With her care and experience, the myofunctional therapy we have been working on has also decreased my symptoms of sleep apnea which has dramatically improved my sleep quality. I can’t thank her enough and always look forward to our next session!

FAQ

  • I am currently working on accepting insurance. I aim to accept insurance by fall 2025. Reach out to inquire!

  • I support people navigating a wide range of voice concerns — from muscle tension dysphonia, nodules, and chronic hoarseness to vocal fatigue, paradoxical vocal fold movement, and voice loss due to overuse or injury. I also work with professional voice users (like teachers, singers, and speakers) who want to restore ease and prevent future strain.

  • Voice therapy focuses on improving how your voice works — how it sounds, feels, and functions. Myofunctional therapy addresses patterns in the mouth, tongue, jaw, and breathing that may be contributing to tension or dysfunction. I often integrate both approaches to support long-term healing and more freedom in how your voice feels and performs.

  • My work is both grounded and intuitive. I draw on clinical training, decades of teaching voice, and my own healing journey. While I follow evidence-based protocols, I also listen closely — to you, your body, and the subtle cues that often get overlooked. My goal is to help you reconnect with your voice through curiosity, play, and deep trust in your body’s wisdom.
